I missed story time at the library because I started an Italian language course. The course should be good. It’s held at Thunderbird University, which specializes in international management degrees. The course instructor seems to be excellent. His main job is consulting on how to do business in Italy. The course will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and will last for 8 weeks. Ciao!

I see in the internet news that the music companies are doing poorly. Sales are down 5% overall from last year, and the licensed online efforts are struggling. At least one executive says privately that they should have done business with Napster. Whatever happened to the idea of businesses existing to serve the needs of their customers?

We had a bad storm last night. I had trouble sleeping with the high winds. It rained quite a bit as well. Some parts of Phoenix received as much as 2 inches of rain. That’s a lot for the desert. The storm also cooled things off. The high today was only 99 degrees. It was too cool to go swimming, so we let Sean play outside in the grass. He likes it when you run towards him. It’s almost like I’m the bull and he’s the matador. He just giggles and laughs.

Sean was still worn out from his activities from yesterday. He slept until about 8:00am, which is more than an hour later than he usually gets up. He also took a long nap, and was still tired before his normal bedtime at 7:30pm.

I had fun with the yardwork this morning. Despite yesterday’s hot and dry weather, it was very humid this morning, so I was really working up a sweat. I had damaged one of the sprinker heads while mowing the lawn, so I replaced the sprinkler head. I was trying to adjust the spray of the sprinkler when I accidently unscrewed the top, creating a 10 foot geyser. I briefly tried screwing it back on, but there was too much pressure. I had to run to the control box, which is on the opposite side of the house. In the process, I ended up getting completely drenched. I wanted to cool off after finishing the yardwork, but that’s not what I had intended.

We had some friends over today for a pool party. Before they arrived, I stopped by the grocery store to pick up some items. I had Sean with me, and they gave him a helium balloon to take home. That was a nice touch by Albertsons.

Sean learned to growl today. I was playing with him, and I made a growling sound. For some reason, he cracked up in laughter. I kept on growling, and he kept on laughing. For the rest of the day, he tried growling on his own.

Everyone had a good time at the pool party. It was a hot day, with a forecast high of 110 degrees, but it was dry, and so it was very comfortable in the pool. Sean spent most of the afternoon and the early evening in the pool, and never tired of playing in the water. We took a brief break for dinner, but then went back in to the pool to cool off afterwards. Sean was so tired from the day’s activities, that when we put him in the crib he immediately layed down, as opposed to standing like he usually does, while we sang him the ABC song.

Sean is learning to walk faster, almost at a run. He really likes it when you follow him around. We had a good time playing together after I got home from work. We all had a nice swim in the pool, and Sean went to sleep tonight without complaining.

Slow day today. The biggest excitement was that we had a thunderstorm late last night. I thought I was dreaming, but Cortney reminded me this morning that it actually rained.

It looks like Sean will be teething for the near future. All four of his first row of molars are now broken through, and it looks like the top eye teeth are close behind.

Now that Sean is walking, we are concentrating our efforts on getting him to talk more. Today, when Cortney was serving Sean lunch, he actually said cheese when she brought him the cheese. Most of the time, he still seems to prefer his own babble, rather than using our words.

Commentary on some recent internet news:

Disney moves to block movie trailers. I think the Disney executives are losing it. It’s no wonder the stock has underperformed recently. A movie trailer is a glorified commercial. Most people pay money to have people watch their commercials. Disney wants to prevent other web sites from showing their trailers. I think this will result in less people going to see Disney movies.

Complaints about money affecting internet search results. I don’t see what the big deal is. If a search engine continues to place meaningless websites above the ones I’m looking for, I will stop using it, regardless whether those sites are paid for or not. I think the independent search sites will always gather more viewers. Let’s hope google doesn’t give in to this trend.

Thanks, Cortney, for fixing dinner three nights in a row, despite the fact that you have a sore foot. I should also add that Cortney tried new dishes for the last two nights, both of which I would eat again.

I think my posts have been a little too repetitive lately. I haven’t had much time to find things on the internet to make my entries more interesting. So tonight, I thought I would show a picture. Here is Sean getting a front row view during story time at the library.

Cortney surprised me tonight by having a spicy baked chicken dish ready to eat when I came home from work. It was well prepared and very tasty. Thanks, Cortney! It was a little hotter today than it has been the last week or so, at 109 degrees, so we all cooled off in the pool afterwards. Sean almost spends more time with his head under the water than out of the water.

Today was devoted to yardwork and cleaning. I did have one nice break. While the floor was drying after being mopped, we all went out into the pool. We had a nice blue sky, and the water was crystal clear. Sean had a good time in the pool as well. He no longer waits for someone to catch him when he goes under the water. Now, he just goes under on his own. He can stay under for at least ten seconds, and he always comes up with a smile on his face. Today, Cortney tried on my swim goggles so she could see Sean under the water. She enjoyed it, as Sean has his eyes wide open and always smiles under the water. We are trying to get Sean to lie on his back in the water, but so far, he isn’t comfortable with leaning his head back.

We made it to the zoo this morning. The phoenix zoo has a smaller number of exhibits than the world wildlife zoo we went to this spring, but they have some nice displays and a lot of play areas for children. We had a good time for the first hour or so, then it got to be too hot. They had a special today where they placed shaved ice in the exhibit areas to try to attract the animals to where they could be seen. It didn’t seem to help much. After 11:00, after being at the zoo for two and a half hours, Sean was asleep, and Cortney and I were ready to head to the air conditioned car. We plan to go back when the weather is cooler.

Cortney and Sean had a busy day today. The two of them spent the entire day shopping. After I got home from work, we all went over to a friend’s house to have a pizza dinner and swim in the pool afterwards. Sean had a great time in the pool. He had enjoyed showing off his swimming skills, and that he is not afraid of going under the water. He ended up staying in the pool for an hour after his normal bedtime. I hope he gets a good night’s sleep. We plan to go to the zoo tomorrow.

Sean was a real pain for most of the day. It’s hard to tell if he is sore, teething, hungry, or just bored. I know it took a lot of effort, but Cortney took the time to make one of her delicious chicken meals. I did have one precious moment with Sean. He sat on the sofa curled up next to me for about 20 minutes. We played a game where he nods his head back and forth, and I nod my head up and down. At least Sean seems to find it amusing.

Reference Desk. Good one stop portal for information.

Interesting news on napster. An appeals court overturned the ruling that napster was required to have 100% filtering in place. However, the new napster is abandoning the mp3 format for a proprietary format. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot! Why does the recording industry think users are going to give up a popular file format for one that has less features from a consumer viewpoint?

Cortney had to run errands and go workout at the gym, so I watched Sean for the entire evening. I took him in the pool, where he spent most of the time playing with the pool thermometer. I suppose only another toddler would understand why the pool thermometer was so fascinating.
