Sean took a nice long nap this afternoon. We put him down after lunch which was around noon, and he was still sound asleep at 4:00 pm. He really needed the sleep, as he hasn’t slept very well the last two days. Now if we could just get Sean to eat a little better…

This morning was devoted to yard work. Tomorrow is loose trash pickup, so I trimmed all of the fast growing summer plants. This is the time of the year where the Mesquite trees are high maintenance, since I have to both trim them and pick up the bean pods that fall on the ground.

Gosford Park

The second movie of the weekend was Gosford Park. This was an interesting movie about the different lives of the well-to-do and their servants in 1932 England. I missed some of the dialogue because I have trouble following the British accents. My only criticism is that the plot was very slow to develop. I rate this movie a B.

A Beautiful Mind

The first movie of the weekend was A Beautiful Mind. I thought this movie was entertaining, but a bit shallow. I wanted to see more of the mathematics and how this related to the main character’s illness. There was nothing really wrong with the movie, but I don’t put in the category of “must see”, so I rate it a B.

Another cool day, with a high of only 108 degrees. After a pleasant morning unicycle ride, I spent the morning vacuuming and mopping the floor. Cortney and I want the house to be clean before we go on our trip next week. Even with the cooler weather today, everyone enjoyed an evening swim in the pool.

Sean and I both got a haircut this evening. Sean did well. He was fine until he started getting hair all over his face. Then he started crying, and everytime he rubbed his face to try to get the hair off, he ended up putting more hair back on. At least he sat still to allow the hairdresser to finish. When we got home, the plan was to immediately jump into the pool to wash the hair off of both of us. After I put on Sean’s bathing suit, he immediately pointed to his bathing suit and babbled one of his phrases. I didn’t recognize at the time what he was telling me, but as he started to urinate onto the tile floor, I realized he was telling me he had to go to the bathroom. This is an important milestone, and now we can think about starting potty training.

Today was my first day wearing Accuvue2 contact lenses. I had been using the original Accuvue lenses for the past seven years. I was actually amazed at the difference. With the old lenses, I always had some small discomfort when I put in a new pair of lenses. With the new lenses, I didn’t experience any discomfort at all. But the best thing about the new lenses is that everything looks much sharper. I recommend anyone using the old Accuvue lenses switch immediately to Accuvue2. The lenses are even the same price.

I really have been on a weather kick lately. Of course, when it is this hot outside, there isn’t much else to write about. Today’s high was only 110 degrees. This evening, Cortney dealt with the heat by a long stay in the pool. She went out to the pool a half hour before Sean and I, and she stayed in the pool even after Sean and I got out. As usual, Sean had a great time in the pool. By the way, Sean is pretty much over his illness. Last night, we gave Sean some nighttime cough syrup, and he slept in an hour later than he usually does. He and I had fun playing together after our swim in the pool. We gave Sean the cough syrup again tonight, so he should sleep in late again.

We had some rain clouds in Phoenix this morning, which is unusual in this hot and dry weather. Some areas actually reported the rain hitting the ground. It is quite common for the rain to evaporate before it hits the ground here. At any rate, the rain clouds didn’t seem to affect the temperature much. The high temperature was still 112 degrees. The pool actually warmed up a bit, to 88 degrees. Cortney still thinks this is too cool. Sean had no complaints, and he was frequently under the water again tonight.

The high temperature today was 113 degrees here in Phoenix. This makes today the hottest day this year, so far. By the time we made it out to the pool, the sky was cloudy. For some reason, the pool actually seemed to be chilly, or at least cool. Sean was shivering went we took him out of the water. He still is a little sick from the croup he had yesterday, but he still had fun playing this evening.

Sean had a speech evaluation today. His speech is only around 12-15 months, but his other development is at age level. The evaluator thought that the speech problem is very correctible. Once the evaluation paperwork is written up, Sean will likely have once a week speech therapy sessions.

This is a good article summarizing all of the issues on global warming. Don’t buy that case of suntan lotion just yet.

Poor Sean has the croup. He woke up this morning with a bad cough and a slight fever. The doctor said it should clear up in a few days. The doctor also said he could still go in the swimming pool, so after dinner and a trip to the store we took Sean into the pool. Croup or not, he still had fun splashing and diving under the water.

The only movie I watched this weekend was I am Sam. This movie could have been a real tear jerker if it had been better done. The story was good, and the acting was decent, but it seemed to go too quickly from one scene to the next without going into any depth. It was almost as if a full length novel were compressed to a two hour movie while trying to be true to each page in the book. The other problem was the copying of too many elements of both Rain Man and Kramer vs. Kramer. At least the writers even realized this, and even worked that into the movie. Still, this movie is worth watching. I rate this movie a B.

Sean either had stomach problems, or he chose this weekend to stress his eating independece. He absolutely refused to sit in his booster seat to eat his meal. We were really starting to worry about Sean. This behavior finally broke this evening, and he sat down and ate a decent meals. He certainly was a lot happier this evening. After dinner, I asked Cortney to get her bathing suit on so we could go into the pool. Sean heard this, and ran and got his own bathing suit. Sean had a good time in the pool, and his good mood lasted the entire evening.
