Sean had fun in the pool this evening. He caught a beach ball for the first time. He also used his new jumping skills to jump off the deck into the pool. He now can jump up an inch or two off the deck, which is almost a foot higher than the water level, before landing in the pool.

Sean had a visit from the early interventionist this morning. This is part of the package of services we received from the state as a result of our quest to get Sean speech therapy. Oh, by the way, Sean has his first speech therapy session on July 26th, ending on almost five month ordeal. This morning’s session was nothing more than an introduction. The early interventionist will be visiting once a week, to help out Sean with his development. She will also be joining Sean at the speech therapist, so she can help Sean at home with the speech therapy. It will be interesting to see how this goes. The way I see it, even if the early interventionist isn’t the most helpful, at least Cortney will get a baby sitter for an hour once a week.

Sean finally was able to use the pool this evening. He was almost too excited about swimming. I just couldn’t do enough to keep him occupied. Sean just wasn’t happy unless he was under the water. After about forty minutes in the pool, I thought Sean would complain when I took him out, but he didn’t seem to mind. He should sleep well tonight.

We had a big storm move through the area last night. Some areas had hurricane force winds. Cortney went outside in the rain to gather all of the pool toys that were blowing everywhere. When I woke up this morning, I found that the rope holding up my century plant stalk had broken, a big tree branch had fallen onto the play set, and the pool was full of leaves again. We didn’t have it too bad though. One of the Honeywell buildings near the airport had most of the roof torn off. Debris had blown all over the airport, closing one of the runways, and damaged cars in the parking lot we used just last week. This evening, I retied the century plant stalk and cleaned out the pool. The tree branch will have to wait until this weekend. We actually had cooler weather today, with a high of only 99 degrees. Sean and I actually played outside in the grass for a few minutes. Tomorrow should be a big day for Sean. He gets to go back into the pool.

Today was more or less a typical Sunday for us. I started the day with some yardwork, followed by cleaning the pool. The filter cartridge was so dirty, that even the vacuum line wasn’t flowing. At least all of the dust and dirt from the last few storms will get cleaned up. After a long nap, I spent the rest of the day relaxing and playing with Sean. I wanted to go for an evening swim in the clean pool, but another storm was rolling through, and I didn’t want to swim with thunder and lightning.

Many people have commented on the recent America West incident where a woman was thrown off the plane for a joke about a drunken flight crew. Most people seem to frame the question in terms of airplane security. I view the whole situation in terms of poor customer relations. I’m thinking the flight attendant should simply have asked if the passenger was wanted to report suspected intoxication of the flight crew. After the passenger had time to say it was just a joke, the flight attendant should have said it wasn’t funny, as the plane would have to be delayed as the flight crew were tested. There certainly was no need to throw a passenger off the plane. It always amazes me how many people in the media, government, and in business forget that businesses exist to serve customers.

We are going to a pool party this evening. The plan is to arrive at the party around Sean’s bedtime, and then put him to sleep so Cortney and I can enyoy ourselves. We know Sean would be disappointed that we can’t take him into the pool because of his ear infection, so we don’t want him to watch us in the pool. It will be interesting to see how the weather holds up. We already have a warning for severe thunderstorms tonight. Speaking of which, we had a nice display of lightning, and the rain actually hit the ground last night.

I tried to give Cortney a break today, and watch Sean for the entire day. We did have fun playing together, but the tough part was keeping Sean from snacking during the day. He isn’t eating well at mealtime, so I want him to be hungry when he gets to the dinner table. He did eat slightly better today. He ate some chicken and cheese for lunch, and had a good size portion of pasta for dinner. I was also able to get Sean to eat some banana chips. If he is going to snack, Sean should at least eat some healthier foods.

Last night’s movie was Orange County. I tried to like this movie, but it really is just another poorly done teen movie. This movie also brought back my own painful memories about my rejection letter from Stanford business school. I don’t know why anyone would think that a dysfunctional family, even if they live in Orange County, would be funny. I rate this movie a C.

I’m looking forward to when Sean is over his ear infection so I can take him into the pool. The last few days have been hard to keep Sean occupied in the evenings. I have found some simple things that get Sean excited. One is just jumping up and down. Sean seems to think it is funny watching me jump, but he still likes to try and jump as well. He is actually able to get both of his feet off the ground at the same time now. The other thing that Sean likes is when I make car noises when he plays with his toy cars and trucks. Sean likes to move the toy car up and down my arm or leg while I make the noises. It amazes my how sometimes the simple things are what Sean enjoys the most.

I had to clean the pool this evening. The recent monsoon storms had filled the pool with leaves and dust while we were away on our vacation. The filter basket was completely clogged with leaves, keeping the vacuum line from running. It may take another day or two for the pool to be completely cleaned up.

I am now number one on the Google search for Pendegrass. A month or two ago, I was number 35 or so, behind a number of genealogy web pages and misspelled Teddy Pendergrass pages, and my brother’s work-related page. I don’t really know what caused the change. What is interesting is what parts of my web site show up in the google search. The first is the rss feed for my movie reviews. This link does nothing in the browser; it is only used for xml aggregation programs. I wonder if someone is collecting movie reviews from weblogs. The second link is my resume. I also wonder if some webcrawler is harvesting resumes, and that is why the resume shows up in the search.

I woke up this morning feeling really good. Actually, I just realized how bad I felt yesterday. The combination of jet lag, I short night’s sleep, and a sore back from wrestling Sean and the luggage through the airport made for a lousy day. Sean was also feeling much better today. The anti-biotic he is taking seems to be helping with his ear infection.

It looks like we brought the humid weather back to Arizona. It’s officially monsoon season here in Phoenix. We are predicted to have a chance of thunderstorms every day this week. One way of dealing with the hot and humid weather here is to relax in the pool. Unfortunately, Sean won’t be going in the pool any time soon. He has an ear infection (I still think it is swimmer’s ear), and he can’t go into the pool for the next five days.

We arrived home safely this evening. Our plane was a half hour late due to storms in the area. We were an additional fifteen minutes late because we arrived just in front of a thunderstorm, and no one wanted to go outside and get the luggage off the plane. I had to carry a sleepy Sean all the way from the gate to the luggage pick-up because they wouldn’t get the stroller off the plane.
