Ethan put himself in an unusual predicament this evening. He was in the saucer, playing contently, then all of a sudden, I heard a hysterical scream. Definitely not his normal crying. I went over to him, and found him with the ring end of the pacifier in his mouth. He had turned it sideways so that the ring was proping his mouth open, and it was wedged in his mouth tightly. I could see why he was so upset.

Ethan pulled himself onto his knees today. He is fascinated with the basket Cortney uses for Ethan’s clothes, bibs and spit-up clothes. Ethan grabbed the top of the basket with his hands, and then pulled himself up. Once he got up onto his knees, all he wanted to do was chew on the handle.

I spent the morning doing heavy yardwork. The mesquite trees in particular were starting to get overgrown, and needed trimming. That effort took a lot out of me, and I didn’t do much for the rest of the day.

We had dinner guests this evening. Cortney made a nice dinner, and we went for a swim afterwards, followed up by dessert inside. Our guests have a girl Sean’s age, so Sean enjoyed having a play companion.

Now for some local weather trivia. Today was the hottest day of the year so far, with a high of 112 degrees. The record high for today is 118 degrees!, set in the Summer of 1990 when the all time record high of 122 degrees was set.

Sean got a double bonus tonight. First the ball pit at Burger King, then a swim in the pool at home. Sean used some social skills at the B.K. After having the play area to himself for awhile, Sean asked another boy who just walked in to follow him up the slide, and he did. The boy was falled by his brother, so Sean was the odd man out after that.

Not much to write about today. I took the day off of work, and ended up sleeping most of the day.

I feel a cold type of illness coming on. Nothing debilitating, just a mild fever and a headache. Of course, my sinuses are so dry, they almost feel cracked and parched, just like the desert we live in here in Phoenix. I hope I’m better by the weekend, but the way this type of illness usually goes for me, I’ll be luck to be better by the fourth of July weekend.

Sean has been having fun with his board puzzles lately, but with an unusual twist. He doesn’t like putting the pieces back, but he likes to take them out, then carefully line them up on the floor. I’m not sure what to make of that.

Sean learned the hard way not to touch a pot of boiling water. I was cooking some pasta, and I guess Sean was interested in how I was cooking. I don’t think Sean was actually burned, but the pot was certainly hot enough to get his attention.

Today was seasonably chilly, with a high temperature of only 98 degrees. Too cold to go swimming, at least in the evening. Cortney did take Sean into the pool during the day.

Being a father is tough, but sometimes just being a husband is difficult. Cortney made a southwestern casserole dish, spiked with one too many vegetables for me to be able to eat. That didn’t leave Cortney very happy.

The only movie we saw this weekend was About Schmidt. Jack Nicholson turns in a decent role as a character trying to discover himself after retirement. I though this was a good movie, but could have been better with a little more development of the main character. I rate this movie a B.

Buy it.

Ethan graduated to the full sized car seat today. Now that he is sitting up, we no longer have need of the detachable carrier of the old car seat. That, and at 17 pounds, Ethan is too heavy to carry around that way.

Sean and I went for just a brief swim tonight. The pool water has cooled off a couple of degrees due to the cooler and dryer weather we have had recently. Sean went down the slide a bunch of times, and played with his toy boats while I warmed up in a towel. We always warm up in the shower after our swim.
