I had an embarrassing parenting moment this evening. I took Sean and Ethan to the library myself, as Cortney did not feel like going. I came home from work late, so I barely arrived at the library in time to go to baby time. Sean was actually well behaved during baby time, allowing Ethan and I to participate in the songs and finger plays.

We had a brief ten minute break between baby time and story time. Sean got hooked on the train table, and I couldn’t pry him away to go to story time after the ten minutes were up. I thought no problem, I would just let him play.

After a half hour or so, Ethan became bored, and I couldn’t keep him from pulling the books of the shelf. So, I gave Sean a choice: he could either go home, or go to the last few minutes of story time. Sean insisted on playing with the trains, so I told him we were going home, and picked him up to carry him out of the library. Sean then started kicking and screaming, causing a big commotion at the library. I tried to ignore the stares, and carried Sean and Ethan out of the library.

I almost made it to the car before my arm became tired. I couldn’t switch arms, since I was also carrying Ethan. So, I put Sean down. Sean then squirmed out of my grasp, and he ran back into the library. I wasn’t able to catch up with him while holding Ethan. I found that Sean had ran all the way into the story room.

I let Sean finish up story time, which only lasted a few more minutes. I didn’t want to cause another commotion, so I asked Sean if he wanted to see the fish tank, which is right by the entrance. He agreed, so we walked quietly out the second time. I still saw some funny looks from the people that had seen me carry Sean out kicking and screaming just a few minutes before. After the fish tank, Sean walked out of the library like nothing had happened.

Next time, I will arrive at the library early, so Sean can have some train table time before story time.
