Happy New Years Eve! I spent most of the day finishing up some of the remaining items on my task list. I did save some time to take the kids to the park this afternoon. This evening, after dinner, we lit a fire in the fireplace, and the whole family, including Leslie and Corky, watched Dr Seuss videos on the TV. Leslie and Corky will be flying out first thing tomorrow morning, so only Cortney and I will be staying up to ring in the new year.

It’s hard to believe there is only one more day after today left this year. At least I don’t have to go back to work until Monday.

After two days, I finally had the energy to do what I wanted today. I took Sean and Ethan to the park in the middle of the afternoon, when it was pleasant outside. I was somewhat hoping that Sean and Ethan would run around and work the energy out of their systems, but they mostly wanted to ride on the swings. We were all having a good time on the swings, so I didn’t mind.

I was able to eat today, and I enjoyed my turkey soup, but I still feel tired and rundown. Sean and Ethan were the opposite. Sean in particular, was full of energy, and was running all over the house. It’s a shame I didn’t feel better; it would have been good to take the kids to the park.

Today wasn’t the best of days for me. I made my turkey soup from the stock of the leftover Christmas turkey. The soup takes a couple of hours of work, and when I was done, I was unable to have any. It seems I have caught an intestinal bug. Sean and Ethan may have the same thing. I noticed that a little bit of diarrhea doesn’t slow down the kids as much as it does me. I hope this thing is overwith by tomorrow.

Cortney and I took Sean and Ethan to Burger King, since we couldn’t go last night because of the football game. Ethan just had a blast with the ball pit, were he was surround by balls. He didn’t have to ask us where to find a ball. Sean was a little bored when we first arrived, since the play area was empty, but as more kids showed up, he had more and more fun. We also went to Burger King to give Cortney’s parents a break. Corky still has pneumonia, and Leslie may be coming down with a cold. The weather here has turned chilly, and it’s just a little too cold for the kids to go out and play. I think it was a good idea to let them work out their energy in the ball pit.

I spent all morning cleaning out and rearranging the garage. This was a task that really needed to be done; the garage floor was covered with a layer of dust. I spent over three hours working on cleaning and rearranging, and I still didn’t finish cleaning up my workbench. At least that is a much smaller task that I can complete at some other time.

Cortney and I went to the insight.com bowl tonight, featuring Virginia Tech against California. I dressed up in Virginia Tech colors, and since I ordered tickets through the school, we sat in the Virginia Tech side of the stadium. Even though our team lost, we got our money’s worth. After Cal scored first, Tech scored 21 unanswered points. Then Tech’s defense started deteriorating, and they found themselves down by 14 points in the 4th quarter. Tech scored again, then the defense finally stopped Cal, and returned the ensuing punt for a touchdown, tying the game with little time left. Unfortunately, Cal scored a field goal as time ran out, with the final score 52 to 49. Even though Tech missed 3 easy field goals and missed out on some obvious pass interference calls, which would have made the difference in the game, it’s hard to complain about losing when you give up 52 points.

Sean was real cute today. Between Cortney and her mom, they managed to leave some gifts for me unwrapped, so they never found their way under the Christmas tree. Understandable, with all of the wrapped presents we had for the kids. Anyway, I was opening presents today. After opening them (and they were nice gifts, by the way), I asked if there were any more presents left to be opened. Sean jumped up and said “yes, there are more upstairs”. I said in return, “show me where”. Sean then proceeded to march upstairs with confidence. He then walked into his room and pointed to some imaginary spots where he said the presents were. I said “they aren’t any more presents, are there?”. Sean replied “no, daddy”.

Merry Christmas everyone! We started off our day by opening presents. Sean had the most fun. He was excited with each new toy he opened. Ethan did not care much for unwrapping presents. He was more interested in finding his ball. I spent most of the morning making the Christmas meal. I made the turkey, dressing, gravy, and cranberry sauce (just like Thanksgiving). After the big meal, everyone pretty much took it easy for the rest of the day.

Ethan was fine today, and ate normally, although we were a bit cautious at breakfast. Unfortunately, I was tired most of the day. Ethan woke up around 3:00 am. It seems he was just thirsty, and went back to bed after I gave him some water.

Ah, Christmas Eve. The evening’s activities included assembling a toy for Ethan, and preparing the brine for tomorrow’s turkey. Sean left some cookies out for Santa, and some carrots in case the reindeer are hungry. Sean isn’t very knowledgeable about Santa, but he certainly knows Christmas means opening presents. I’m looking forward to it myself.

We went to zoo lights this evening. The zoo lights is a Christmas light show put on by the Phoenix zoo. We brought the double-stroller just in case Sean became tired and didn’t want to walk. Everyone enjoyed the lights, especially Sean, who had fun identifying all of the animals depicted by the lights. We let both kids snack while we were at the zoo, and I think this turned out to be a mistake. I went to put Ethan to bed right after we arrived home, and while his head was resting on my shoulder, he vomited all over the place. I really hope Ethan just ate too much, otherwise, we will be in for a rough night. And, we don’t want to discourage Santa from visiting the house.

I set up the train set this morning. Normally, Sean’s grandfather does this, but he is in bed with pneumonia. I spent at least part of the day putting the cars back on the track after they derailed, or even when Ethan grabbed them. What amazed me is that Sean always put the cars on the train in a certain order. First the red coal car, then the green flat car, then the yellow log car, then the blue flat car, the orange box car, and of course, the caboose is last. He picked this order every time. Well, at least Sean is showing good memory skills in addition to his compulsive behavior.
