We had dinner guests this evening. Sean’s friends Shannon and Nicolas, and of course their parents, came over for dinner. Cortney made an excellent meal, and Sean had fun playing with his friends. Ethan did not care much for the late meal, and ended up being forced ot put him to bed early. We let Sean stay up late, so he should sleep in tomorrow.

I took Sean with me to get the emissions inspection on my car. Sean and I were able to stay in the car while they ran the test. Sean appeared to be interested in the whole operation. Fortunately, my car passed. With an eleven year old car, passing the emissions inspection is not a sure thing.

Sean had soccer practice today. This would normally be a game day, but Sean’s team had a bye, so we had practice instead. Sean did fairly well. Most of practice was a scrimmage game, and Sean played all but the last few minutes. I brought Ethan too, and Ethan had fun running around and playing with all of the soccer balls. It was a real nice day today, so we went over to the playground next to the practice field after practice ended. Despite the fact that Sean had not eaten lunch, we stayed on the playground for nearly an hour.

Sean was excited today. He had the oppportunity to go over to his friend Kenneth’s house. I don’t know which Sean likes more — Kenneth or his collection of Thomas (the Tank Engine) gear. Actually, it’s clearly Kenneth; Sean had fun playing outside in the sandbox as well as the trains. Of course, Cortney like’s socializing, and Kenneth’s Mom likes adult company, having missed out after the birth of her baby.

Today concludes the first work week of the year. Overall, it was a slow week. I still haven’t transitioned into my new job yet. It made my day when I was greeted at the door by the whole family; first Sean, then Cortney, and finally Ethan. Somehow that makes the time spent at work seem worthwhile.

Sean has become more demanding lately. Today, I told him we were going to McDonalds, to use the play area. He insisted on going to Burger King. I explained that we go to Burger King on Friday’s. He was very insistent, and I had to fib to say we were going to Burger King to even get Sean in the car. Sean doesn’t always disagree though; when it was time to leave McDonalds, he put on his shoes and walked out without any coaxing. And when we got home and it was time for his bath, he took off his clothes himself. He complained a little when it was time for bed, but then cooperated with brushing his teeth and reading his beditme story.

I haven’t done any political commentary in a while, mainly because there are better opinions on the web than mine. But I can’t resist posting a link to this article about the problems with the intersection of politics and science. A must read, by the author Michael Crichton.

Since Ethan has been fussy and hasn’t slept well in the last few days, Cortney took him to the doctor. The doctor said the most likely cause is teething. He has an eye tooth coming in, as well as some molars. Well, it’s good to hear there is nothing wrong with him, although the next few weeks may be rough on us.

Story time has started back up at the library. We were going to go as a family, but Ethan was fussy all day long, and we were afraid he wouldn’t be happy at the library. So, I took Sean by myself. Sean still enjoys playing at the train table at the library. Even though we didn’t have Ethan, we went to baby time anyway. Sean was restless, so we left early. They had some new songs, so I was glad we went in. After playing with the trains again, we went to story time. Sean really seemed to enjoy story time. He paid attention to all of the stories. I was glad we went to the library.

This evening, I was trying to help Cortney out by giving Sean a time out. I was carrying him, and trying to step over the gate, and go upstairs. I lost my balance, and in order to protect Sean, I had to fall backwards. I ended up crashing through the gate, with Sean landing on top of me. Sean was a little scared, but unhurt. I escaped with a bruise or two, and a torn fingernail. The gate on the other hand, was in bad shape. The last piece that latches onto the banister had completely come off. One if the spindles that prevents the gate from sliding too far also broke. I was able to fix the gate by hammering the fittings back into place, and gluing the broken spindle. We really need the gate to keep Ethan from crawling up the stairs unnoticed, so I hope the gate holds together, at the very least, until this weekend.

I forgot to mention yesterday that Sean is line leader for the week. This means that all of the kids in the class have to line up behind Sean when they leave the classroom. Sean is excited about this, and was happy to tell Cortney and me about it.

Today was the first day back on our regular schedule since the Christmas holidays. Sean did not mind going back to school, although he did object to putting on his jacket before going outside. Work for me was uneventful, which is good, I guess. Both Sean and Ethan were real excited to see me when I came home from work. To give Cortney a break, I took Sean and Ethan to the park to play. We had fun, but a dirty diaper ended our play time. This evening, I am playing with my new toy, a new graphics card. I hope to use it to copy our VCR tapes to DVD.

We took Sean and Ethan to the zoo today. Since it was cold out, we went in the afternoon, after lunch. We still had to wear jackets, but it was comfortable in the sun. Ethan had enjoyed the pidgeons and the ducks more than the zoo animals, although he had a blast with the goats in the petting area. Sean seemed more interested in playing than seeing the animals, but that wasn’t a problem, since the Phoenix Zoo has lots of play areas. It was a big day for both Sean and Ethan; the both feel asleep during the car ride home.

This evening, we went over to see some friends who recently had a baby girl. They have a boy, Kenneth, between Sean and Ethan’s age, so the three boys had fun playing together. Kenneth was obsessed with trying to pick up and hold Ethan. I guess I shouldn’t be so hard on Sean when he does the same thing.
