The Last of the Long Days

March 31, 2005 on 7:39 pm | In Main | No Comments

I worked a long day today, but did make it home in time to take Sean to his gym class. These long days have taken their toll. I appear to be coming down with a cold. It’s no surprise where it came from, both Sean and Ethan are sick. Not real sick, just enough to make them a bit cranky, without sapping any of their energy. Not a good deal for Cortney and me.

Another Long Day

March 30, 2005 on 8:10 pm | In Main | No Comments

Another long day of driving, meetings, and even dinner out for work. We went to a New Mexico style Mexican restaurant, and the food was good (and spicy too). Of course, I would rather be home with Cortney and the kids.

A Long Day

March 29, 2005 on 8:03 pm | In Main | No Comments

I’m taking a class at the company learning center, which adds more than a half hour to my commute time. So, barely made it home in time to take Sean for a swim lesson at 6:30 this evening. I’m going to have a similarly busy schedue for the next two days, so don’t expect any in depth writing to happen.

Sean Wants to Grow Up

March 28, 2005 on 8:33 pm | In Main | No Comments

Sean has figured out that when he grows up, he won’t get any more time-outs. He hasn’t quite figure out the cause vs. effect yet. I was trying to tell him that older boys don’t do things to cause them to get time-outs (I didn’t tell him that when older boys do things wrong, they tend to go all the way and get into big trouble), but he did not quite understand. I too, am looking forward to the day when he doesn’t get any more time-outs.

Happy Easter!

March 27, 2005 on 8:39 pm | In Main | No Comments

We celebrated Easter today by starting the day off with an egg hunt. Sean and Ethan had fun, and they found all of the eggs, so there were no surprises when I did my yard work later on that day. I did not enjoy the egg hunt as much. My allergies were really bad this morning. This isn’t unexpected; the heavy rains we had earlier this year are resulting in high pollen levels.

The rest of the day was spent reading the newspaper and doing laundry, bills, and taxes. I did find some time to play Uno with Sean.

A Day at the Zoo

March 26, 2005 on 6:18 pm | In Main | No Comments

We spent the day at the zoo today. We had a beautiful day here, sunny and cool. So, we weren’t too surprised to see that the zoo was crowded. We parked further away from the entrance than we ever have before.

We took advantage of the nicer weather to rent a paddleboat at the main pond in the zoo. Cortney and I manned the foot pedals, Sean sat in the back, and Ethan sat between Cortney and me. The pedaling was a bit hard, but it was fun to steer the boat between all of the ducks and turtles.

We didn’t see that many animals today. Between the boat ride, a long lunch, and time at the play area, we didn’t have much time to check out the animals. Still, Sean and Ethan had a great time, and we only left when they started to get tired.

A Trip to the Mall

March 25, 2005 on 9:56 pm | In Main | No Comments

Since I had the day off, and it looked like rain, we made a trip to the mall. We went to the fancier mall at the other side of town, in Chandler.

After the long car ride there, we started off in the play area. For the first time, I realized Sean is now too big for the play area, at least the play area in this mall. He has been over the height limit for some time, but so are many of the other kids that use the play area. The play area in the mall closest to us has some large objects in the play area, so it was not as noticeable. Sean tried to play tag with another boy. It wasn’t his fault, but as he was running around, he was plowing the smaller children over with his larger bulk. I had to tell Sean no tag and no running in order to keep peace in the play area.

Ethan, of course, has no size problem in the play area. His only problem is that he is stubborn, so that if someone is in his way, he has the tendency to push them aside, even if they are larger than he is.

Still, Sean and Ethan still managed to have fun playing, and we all had a good time.

Thursday Fun

March 24, 2005 on 8:45 pm | In Main | No Comments

Today was a typical Thursday. We had a nice dinner together, followed up by a Uno game with Cortney, Sean, and me, with Ethan watching. Then it was time to take Sean to gym class, then to put Sean to bed.

Cortney went out to the movies tonight, and I’m just relaxing. I have a three day weekend to look forward to, as I have off tomorrow.

Go Fly a Kite

March 23, 2005 on 7:29 pm | In Main | No Comments

We had a windy day today, so it was a perfect opportunity to take Sean and Ethan to the park to show them how to fly a kite. I had no problem getting our kite in the air, and I let both Sean and Ethan try to fly it. Ethan let go shortly after I gave him the string spool, so after I chased down the string, he did not get another opportunity. Sean did fairly well, with only a couple of mishaps. The worst was when the kite string got caught in a tree. But with some careful maneuvering, and a lucky gust of wind, I was able to get it free. We had the kite in the air for over an hour total. It was fun.

Spring Party

March 22, 2005 on 8:09 pm | In Main | No Comments

Cortney held a spring party with the MOMS club. Poor Sean. He thought this was a party with presents, and he woke up at 5:30 in the morning, excited with the thought he would be getting gifts later in the day. Apparently, Sean was satisfied with playing with his friends and receiving sugary treats instead.

We missed the library tonight. I took Sean for both a make-up gym class and a make-up swim lesson. I think that was enough activity to tire Sean out, and I hope he sleeps late tomorrow morning.

Sean Waters the Plants

March 21, 2005 on 8:20 pm | In Main | No Comments

I’m back to running a training course at work, which is fun, but the highlight of my day was having Sean join me in watering the new plants. He followed me around as I watered the plants, then I gave Sean the watering can after most of it was emptied out, so he could water the last few plants. The full watering can is a bit too much for Sean to carry. Sean wanted to know all about how the plants would grow, and I was happy to tell him.

While Sean had fun, poor Ethan was jealous. After we were done, he kept bringing his shoes to me so he could go out and water the plants. Since it was dinner time, he did not get his wish. Maybe tomorrow.

A Pool Disaster

March 20, 2005 on 7:41 pm | In Main | No Comments

I went out this morning to get some new plants for the yard, for the spring planting. I had to go to two stores to get everything I needed.

While I was unloading the plants from the car, I noticed that the side of the house was awfully wet. The stones in the drainage area were practically floating. We had light rain last night, but not enough to cause the water level I was seeing. When I caught sight of the pool, my thought was “Oh, no”. The pool level was two feet low. I thought at first it might be a leak. When I went to check out the filter area, I figured out what had happened. The valve for the drain line was open, so when the filter ran at night, it drained the pool. The worst part was that my brand new drain hose had ruptured from the weight of all of the water.

I don’t know for sure if it was Sean or Ethan, but the filter is right by the play set, so I would say it was likely. It’s over and done with, so there is no sense in assigning blame.

I refilled the pool without any trouble. I did get all of the plants planted as well. I put in a bush morning glory in the front yard, two green daises (euryops) in the back yard, a new blue agave to replace the old century plant by the pool, a desert lilac in the pool area, and some penstemon plants to round out the pool area. I checked and fixed all of the drip fittings as well. My track record is to kill about half of the new plants I plant, so I’m trying to do a bit better this year.

A Lazy Day

March 19, 2005 on 9:12 pm | In Main | No Comments

The forecast was for rain today. We had lots of clouds, but no rain. But because of the likelihood of rain, we had no plans for the day. I ended up doing almost nothing productive for the entire day, just taking it easy. I did spend some quality time with Sean and Ethan though. Perhaps that is more important.

The Weekend is Here!

March 18, 2005 on 9:59 pm | In Main | No Comments

Normally Friday night’s are fun, but for some reason, Sean and Ethan both decided not to behave at Burger King this evening. They behaved well for Sean’s swim lesson, but I think they lost it when we arrived at Burger King. They didn’t do anything particularly bad, but when they stopped following directions, we ended up coming home early.

The worst was when I first arrived. Sean snuck out the bag of fig newtons I had in the backpack, then took them into the play area, so I couldn’t see Sean and Ethan eat them while I was waiting on our food order. Little brats!

I suspect the problem was that Sean and Ethan were actually tired. I’m feeling a bit tired myself, so I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend.

Happy Pink Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2005 on 7:34 pm | In Main | No Comments

Sean was eating a green shamrock cookie after dinner, and I was trying to tell him about Saint Patrick’s Day. I don’t think he heard me correctly, so he kept saying Pink Patrick Day for the rest of the evening, even though I tried to correct him.

This morning, Sean had completely forgotten about the incident at McDonald’s the night before. Well, not completely. After gym class, he asked for an ice cream cone, and since he behaved well, I gave him one. We went through the drive-through at McDonalds, and he ate it in the car on the way home. He sure did enjoy it.
