Hot, But Dry

June 30, 2005 on 7:18 pm | In Main | No Comments

I saw tonight on the news that the relative humidity was 4%. That’s pretty dry. The pool has definitely cooled off a degree or two from the evaporation.

It’s also hot and dry upstairs, without working air conditioning. The repairman found a failed transformer in the air handler, which he replaced, then discovered the blower motor was bad, causing the transformer to fail. He had to find a replacement motor, and it will not be installed until tomorrow.

A Hot Situation

June 29, 2005 on 8:01 pm | In Main | No Comments

As I’m writing this, things are a bit warm. The upstairs air conditioning unit has conked out. It’s a good thing we have a two unit system, as at least I will be able to sleep comfortably. I scheduled a repairman to come out tomorrow morning.

I first noticed the problem as I was about to start my workout. I checked the outside unit and the circuit breaker, but could not find any problems. I decided to go ahead with my workout anyway. It’s a good thing I had the pool to cool off in afterwards.

A Long Day

June 28, 2005 on 7:57 pm | In Main | No Comments

I worked from home this morning, since I needed to let the cleaners in the house. I worked a bit late this evening, fixed myself dinner, then went out and picked up mesquite beans in the front yard. I finished with a relaxing swim in the pool, but that did not leave time for much else.

Photos from Florida

June 27, 2005 on 8:45 pm | In Main | No Comments

I finally got around to looking at all the pictures from Florida that Cortney has sent. Sean always looks like he is having fun. What surprises me is that Ethan looks much older, even though it has only been two weeks since I have seen him last. The other thing I noticed is how green Florida looks compared to Arizona.

A Mixed Day

June 26, 2005 on 8:20 pm | In Main | No Comments

I finished some important chores today, but I also took it easy as well. The highlight of my day was when I received a phone call from Sean. He was happy to tell be about his new train bridge. I also talked to Ethan, who apparently didn’t like the raisins. I’m glad Sean and Ethan are having a good time in Florida.

A Leisurely Day

June 25, 2005 on 7:25 pm | In Main | No Comments

I got up early this morning for a run, while it was still cool outside. I ran at a moderate pace. I felt I could have pushed myself harder, but I wanted to take it easy on my calf muscles, since I’m not used to running. It was nice to go right into the swimming pool after I was done.

Even though Cortney and the kids are in Florida, I decided there was no reason I couldn’t do some outdoor grilling. So tonight, I cooked up some hamburgers, enough for a couple of meals. They were quite tasty.

Other than getting some chores done, I just relaxed for most of the rest of the day.

A Scorpion Sting

June 24, 2005 on 8:47 pm | In Main | No Comments

I was stung by a scorpion last night. I was on the sofa reading a book, and I felt something on my elbow. The pain wasn’t too bad, and I didn’t even know for sure I was stung until I started feeling a tingling sensation. Fortunately, it was just a baby scorpion. The whole thing could fit on a dime. The scorpion was pulverized and flushed down the toilet for its efforts.

I could feel some numbness on my arm and some of my fingers, but I had no problem going to sleep last night. I would still hate to be stung by a full-sized adult scorpion.

Floppy’s Fear

June 23, 2005 on 9:09 pm | In Main | No Comments

Since Sean and Ethan aren’t around, I can really tell a story about what they do, so today, I will settle on a cat story instead.

Floppy was skulking around this morning, and I couldn’t figure out why. She was hiding underneath the dresser, and even though I was able to coax her out, I could tell she just wasn’t happy. When I finally left for work, I figured out what happened. I left the cat carrier in the laundry room, and Floppy had seen it, so she thought she was going back to the vet.

Well, I put the carrier out in the garage, and when I came home from work, Floppy was her normal self. She’s a smart cat.

We had a thunderstorm today, even including a bit of rain. I was surprised that we had a storm before the monsoon season started.

A Cooling Trend

June 22, 2005 on 8:32 pm | In Main | No Comments

It cooled off today, with a high of only 113 degrees. It was still too hot, and I was worried about Floppy when I drove her over to the vet for her fluid injection. She survived, so I guess it wasn’t a big deal.

The report from Florida is that everyone seems to be over their illnesses, and Sean and Ethan had fun at the zoo.

The Dreaded Grocery Store

June 21, 2005 on 7:24 pm | In Main | No Comments

Sometimes I just don’t fully appreciate all of the things Cortney does for me. Tonight was one of those times. I was all out of food, and needed to make a trip to the grocery store. I also needed to pick up a prescription, so I had to make a trip to the dreaded Super WalMart.

I had never done a full grocery shopping trip at the WalMart before, so I had to figure out where everything was. In the end, I was able to find everything I needed, and the check out lines were short, so I had no problem.

It was even hotter today than yesterday, with a high of 114 degrees, just one degree shy of the record. My car thermometer was reading 122 degrees, so it was definitely hot on the pavement. We even had some virga. The pool has definitely warmed up to bathwater temperatures.

Working Late

June 20, 2005 on 8:16 pm | In Main | No Comments

I had a late meeting today, so I just stayed late at work. It was nice not to have to impact anyone else’s schedule. After a workout at home, a swim in the pool, and dinner, that pretty much ended the evening for me.

It was a hot day today, with a high of 112 degrees. I almost burned my hand just touching the front door know of the house.

News from Florida: Ethan is apparently better, but Cortney sure does sound hoarse. I hope everyone in Florida is better soon.

Another Busy Day

June 19, 2005 on 7:57 pm | In Main | No Comments

Today was spent doing yard work and working on the computers. I did enough yard work that my shoulders are sore. I put a larger hard drive in my old computer, and I am now trying to get that computer fixed up.

Poor Ethan is sick. He was vomiting and had diarrhea. I hope he is better by tomorrow.

Saturday News

June 18, 2005 on 7:20 pm | In Main | No Comments

I miss Cortney, Sean, and Ethan the most around meal times. I have been keeping myself busy, so the only time I feel lonely is when I eat by myself. Today, lunch and breakfast were quick meals, but I cooked a nice dinner for myself. I made something like jambalaya, but I can’t really call it that because I did not use a recipe. It wasn’t too bad, but if I do it again I will improve it a bit.

I started the day off with a morning run. Despite the fact that I haven’t run in a year and a half, I was able to finish a 5k without any problem. I might be slightly sore tomorrow, but nothing I can’t live with.

I followed the run by washing and waxing the car. When I started, I couldn’t help but feel how old my 1993 BMW is, but after I was done, I realized the car doesn’t look too bad.

The new computer is essentially done. The case is all closed up, and I am fully posting this from the new computer. I still will be installing new programs for a while, but all of the essential software is up and running. Tomorrow, I plan on working on the old computer, adding a new hard drive for extra storage, and cleaning up the software.

Home Alone

June 17, 2005 on 8:59 pm | In Main | No Comments

I have spent the majority of the day working on my new computer. It seems like it takes forever to get a machine up and running, configured, and all of the software installed.

I am writing this with my old computer desktop displayed remotely on the new computer. This set up allows me to easily move back and forth from the old computer to the new one. I hope to get the new computer finished soon, so I can start on some other projects.

The New Computer

June 16, 2005 on 6:32 pm | In Main | No Comments

I assembled the parts for the new computer last night, but I have yet to turn it on. Here’s what I’m building:

  • Antec Sonata Case
  • AMD 64 Athlon 3700+ (San Diego core)
  • DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D motherboard
  • Sapphire X800XL 256MB video card
  • 2X1G Corsair XMS PC3200 memory
  • Seagate 250Gb SATA hard drive
  • Plextor PX740A Dual-layer DVD RW drive
  • Lite On DVD ROM drive

This new computer should have plenty of horsepower.

I don’t know how far I will get with this tonight. It was a long day at work, with a class at the company training center near the airport. I had bad traffic on the way home, taking me nearly an hour to get home. To relax, I cleaned out the pool filter cartridge. I would rather do this than work on the new computer, particularly if I run into any problems.

Cortney reports from Florida that Sean and Ethan are getting plenty of exercise, mostly in the pool. They have been worn out nearly everyday they have been there. I like hearing news like this. My fear was that Sean and Ethan would be out of control, needing their father to help discipline them. Now Cortney and her parents just need to keep this routine going another few weeks.
