Bad Company

January 1, 2003 on 8:46 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

We did see a movie last weekend, Bad Company, that I never wrote a review on. This movie would be hard to categorize. Who would expect Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins together in a spy flick? As a spy movie, it was weak on story. The movie had some comedic movements, but not enough to sustain it as a comedy. Still, the movie had enough action and plot pull to make it interesting to watch. I rate this movie a C.

Minority Report

December 23, 2002 on 9:14 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The second movie of the weekend was Minority Report. I thought that this was an excellent science fiction movie. Spielberg did a good job with this movie, and didn’t botch the ending like he did in A.I. I didn’t care much for Tom Cruise as the leading character, but that didn’t spoil the movie. As a science fiction fan, I rate this movie an A, but I would recommend seeing the movie even if you aren’t a science ficiton fan.

Reign of Fire

December 23, 2002 on 9:08 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The first movie of the weekend was Reign of Fire. I suppose the Hollywood types thought that realistic-looking dragon scenes would be enough to sell a movie, even with a plot that could be picked apart by a seven year old. Are we supposed to believe that a single dragon could spawn and lead to the destruction of the civilized world, only to be destroyed by three individuals in a post-apocalyptic world? This movie is so bad, it doesn’t deserve a letter grade. It deserves a steaming turd rating.

K-19: Widowmaker

December 16, 2002 on 9:14 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

Time for some movie reviews. The second movie of the weekend was K-19: Widowmaker. This movie was interesting, but maybe a tad too long. It’s about a Soviet nuclear-powered sub that has problems on it’s first time at sea. The movie set was very realistic (very similar to the Soviet sub we toured in St Petersburg, Fl). I wasn’t that impressed with Harrison Ford, but I thought that Liam Neeson performed well. I rate this movie a B.

Ice Age

December 16, 2002 on 9:14 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The first movie of the weekend was Ice Age. This movie had an absolutely silly plot, and in my opinion, the story did not take advantage of the “ice age” them. They story is about a woolly mammoth, a sloth, and a sabre-tooth tiger who help a human (or is Neanderthal?) baby. However, the characterization was excellent, and this made the movie worth watching. In fact, I think they should have kept the three main characters, and started over with a different plot. I rate this movie a B.

Men in Black II

December 9, 2002 on 9:00 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

We did see a movie this past weekend, Men in Black II. Not expecting much from this movie, I did find it to be enjoyable entertainment. Of course, the best acting in this movie was actually from a dog. I can’t say this movie was plot-less, but the plot only existed to allow the existence of the special effects, which weren’t too bad. Some people say this movie was a big let down from the first one, but I didn’t think the first movie was anything special, and so I didn’t see much difference between the two. I rate this movie a B-.

Star Wars, Attack of the Clones

December 1, 2002 on 9:20 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The movie of the weekend was Star Wars, Attack of the Clones. In some ways, this was the worst of the Star Wars movie, and in some ways, it was the best. My first comment was that this movie was too long. We had to split the viewing over two evenings just to get through it. I thought too much time was spent on the romance between Anakin and Amidala on Naboo, and these scenes could easily have been omitted without affecting the main story; we already new that they fell in love in the first movie. The big plus of the movie was the mass Jedi battle. This one scene would be worth the price of admission alone. Still, this movie doesn’t quite tell a coherent story, and almost abandons the viewer midway through the movie. I still can’t figure out why the clone army was created in the first place. I rate this movie a C.

The Salton Sea

November 24, 2002 on 8:55 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The movie of the weekend was The Salton Sea. About half way through this movie, I thought this was another one of those artistic attempts at filming the drug world, something along the lines of Blow. This is definitely a very dark and violent movie, but I was surprised to see it turn out differently then what I had expected. Val Kilmer showed his acting talent in this movie. I would recommend this movie if you are looking for something different. I rate it a B.

Impostor

The movie of the weekend was Impostor. This was a decent science fiction movie, with an almost standard plot. The movie did have a nice double twist at the end. Stay away from it if your are not a science fiction fan, otherwise, it is worth your time. I rate it a B.

Death to Smoochy

November 11, 2002 on 6:05 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

I forgot to write the movie review for this weekend. The one movie we saw was Death to Smoochy. This movie was slow to develop, and the first half of the movie put three adults to sleep. I ended up watching the second half of the movie the following evening. After the slow beginning, the movie did have some funny parts, and the corporate invasion of the kid show theme was interesting. I would say this movie was worth watching, but only if they don’t have any other selections in the video store. I rate this movie a C.

Windtalkers

October 20, 2002 on 8:51 am | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

After some time off for the new baby, it’s time for some movie reviews. Last night’s movie was Windtalkers. Despite the fact that this was an action movie, this was one of the worst World War II movies I have seen. The violence level was off the scale, but the war scenes were completely unrealistic. Every single grenade and artillery explosion was accompanied by a flash of pyrotechnic flame. If a comic book effect was desired, then this movie would have been better off as a computer animation. I hope that this movie took liberties with the real story, as it doesn’t make sense to me to need a code to call in artillery fire. Codes are only needed for strategic communications. I can only assume that the Navajo code talkers were involved in combat when the command headquarters was overrun. Of course, this would not have made a good action movie. One more complaint — I thought Nicolas Cage was a poor choice for the leading role. I rate this movie a D.

Insomnia

October 20, 2002 on 8:45 am | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The first of the weekend movies was Insomnia, as in the perfect cure (grin). Let me start of with a disclaimer that I really don’t like these types of murder-suspense movies. I did think that the plot was very slow to develop, and once you new the plot, the rest of the movie was boring. Al Pacino is definitely over the hill in this movie. I rate it a C.

Changing Lanes

October 20, 2002 on 8:39 am | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

Last Wednesday, we saw Changing Lanes. This was a fairly interesting movie, but with nothing exceptional to offer. Samuel Jackson did a much better acting job than Ben Affleck. I think the movie took some cheap shots at Wall Street lawyers, but that didn’t affect the movie. I rate it a B.

The Scorpion King

October 8, 2002 on 9:15 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

I forgot to write the review for the one movie we saw last weekend — The Scorpion King. This was certainly a light movie, both in terms of the plot and the acting. The action scenes were reasonable, and I thought overall, it was entertaining. I did find the lengths the movie went to keep the PG13 to be very annoying. An action movie of this type must show at least some violence and gore, and the pre-teen sexual inuendo was very childish. I rate this movie a B for the entertainment value, and a D for artistic value.

The Birthday Girl

September 22, 2002 on 8:20 pm | In Movie Reviews | No Comments

The second movie of the weekend was Birthday Girl. This movie was about an Englishman’s ordeal with a mail order bride. Nicole Kidman played the mail order bride. I didn’t think she could play a Russian girl, but she wasn’t too bad. The movie was at least interesting, so I rate it a B.
