A Fast

January 3, 2008 on 5:57 pm | In Main | No Comments

Just to try something different, I went on a fast today. I read something that a fast for a day can help relieve and overloaded digestive system, and mine certainly needed a break after the holiday gorging. Besides, I wanted to see if I could go a day without eating.

I started the day with my normal exercise routine, and I had plenty of liquids. I managed to go until about 1:30 in the afternoon without feeling hungry. I was hungry on and off for the rest of the day, but my energy level never dropped.

Overall, I’m still undecided if I would try this again.

Monovision

January 2, 2008 on 8:04 pm | In Main | No Comments

The first work day of the year wasn’t too bad, and a short break to get an eye exam made it even easier.

The eye doctor has me experimenting with monovision. This is where one eye (my right one) is focusing on long distance, and the other (my left) if focusing on near images. The main reason for this it to accommodate presbyopia, which I am starting to get.

So far, it doesn’t seem to be too bad. My long distance vision isn’t as sharp, but it is much easier to switch focus from near to long distance.

A New Year

January 1, 2008 on 6:55 pm | In Main | No Comments

I started off the day by officially ending the holiday season — by taking down the outside Christmas decorations. The job of putting everything away was made much easier by Cortney’s parents; they cleaned the garage while we went to Flagstaff.

It was a nice day today. I took Sean out for a brief bicycle lesson. Afterwards, we walked over the park, then when we came back, the kids played outside while I did some weeding. The next few days are supposed to be even nicer, with temperatures in the 70’s.

Sandy, our new cat, is adjusting well. She has an energy level and temperament between Zelda and Zip, our other cats, so she gets along with both. She doesn’t mind the occasional paw batting fight with Zelda, and she also likes lounging around with Zip. Sandy doesn’t care much for Princess, our dog, but she isn’t afraid of her, either.

Bring on 2008

This might be the last day of 2007, but other than a nice dinner, it wasn’t much to write about. Cortney’s parents invited us and my parents out to dinner, and we had a good time.

We kept Sean up until 10:00 PM, so that he could watch the ball drop in New York City. I still don’t think he understood the time zone thing.

Vacation’s Almost Over

December 30, 2007 on 10:47 pm | In Main | No Comments

Just two days left for my vacation. I spent most of the weekend working on cleaning up bills and paperwork. Unfortunately, I have been putting this off for just too long, so even though I put a dent in the work, there is still plenty more to do. I believe I know have a workable system, so if I can just complete the initial cleanup, I should be able to maintain the system.

Snow Day

December 27, 2007 on 9:53 pm | In Main | No Comments

Cortney and I took the kids back to Flagstaff to play in the snow. Unlike last time, there was plenty of snow, but there were also some icy spots on the sled trails. That made for some fast sledding, but for painful bounces and crashes. I have a number of bruises, but sledding with Sean was lots of fun.

Unfortunately, Ethan did not have fun again. I took him down once on the sled with me, and sent him down a small hill by himself, but he did not enjoy it.

Boxing Day, 2007

I didn’t want to get involved in shopping today. Cortney went out first thing this morning with my mom. She got home late in the morning, and wanted help with the returns. I also needed to exchange a pair of snow pants. We ended up making two shopping trips, with a break for lunch in between.

The stores were all crowded, but the only lines we experienced were at Kohl’s.

Christmas Day, 2007

December 25, 2007 on 10:38 pm | In Main | No Comments

My parents and grandmother arrived early this morning, so we all could participate in opening presents. The big present this year was the Wii game console. I have a feeling Cortney and I and the kids will all be using it quite a bit in the next few days.

With some help, we successfully hosted the Christmas dinner. As usual, I did the turkey and stuffing, and both turned out well.

Christmas Eve Fun

December 24, 2007 on 8:42 pm | In Main | No Comments

Today was quite enjoyable. Leslie and Corky took Sean and Ethan to the park this afternoon, leaving Cortney and I alone to relax. We both ended up taking naps.

I had some last minute Christmas shopping to do, but I went early and beat the crowds.

The kids ended the evening with a reading of The Night Before Christams, and I am working on brining the turkey for tomorrow’s dinner. Cortney is busy placing presents under the tree.

Guests

Cortney’s parents arrived today from Florida. We picked them up just before noon, and I had enough time to do some more digging by my wall before we all went over to my parents for dinner. Sean and Ethan behaved well for dinner, and we all had a good time.

Sandy, our new cat, had her first full run of the house. We had been keeping her in the upstairs bathroom so that she could slowly get used to our house and are other cats. Sandy seems to be doing well, and she likes the cat tower we have upstairs.

Outdoor Work Day

December 22, 2007 on 10:11 pm | In Main | No Comments

Today, I began digging under the foundation of the cement block wall at the back corner of the pool area. I had two bottle trees removed earlier this year because they were damaging the wall. It took me an hour of digging before I found any significant roots, but then I found a big one. It was six inches in diameter, and was clearly the root responsible for damaging the wall. I had to go out an ax to remove the root. I didn’t finish, as all the work was making my back sore, and I did not want to overdue it.

Holiday Time?

December 21, 2007 on 10:34 pm | In Main | No Comments

Today didn’t quite seem like a day off; I had to finish up a few items for the year today. We also had to deal with having the house cleaned, and taking Princess and Zip to the vet for yearly exams. With all that out of the way, I’m starting to get into the holiday mood.

A Busy Day

December 20, 2007 on 8:48 pm | In Main | No Comments

Today was pretty busy for a vacation day. I had my car serviced this morning. Today was also a half school day, and I went with Cortney to both drop the kids off and pick them up. This evening was gym class, and the rest of the day was filled in by straightening the house for the cleaners, who come tomorrow since they regularly scheduled day falls on Christmas.

Cortney Gets An Early Christmas Present

December 19, 2007 on 11:28 pm | In Main | No Comments

Cortney told me what she really wanted for Christmas was another cat, so we got one. With three cats, I guess our house is now officially a cattery. Our new cat is named Sandy, because of the color of her fur. She is friendly with everyone in the family, but she hasn’t met any of other pets yet, as we have her in the upstairs bathroom until she gets used to the house.

Done with Work

December 18, 2007 on 10:45 pm | In Main | No Comments

I’m done working for the year, at least on the clock. I still have a few things to finish, which I will do from home.
